“El Cerrito Place” – ChesneyOnline Personal View

Aug 12

From time to time I will post my personal thoughts about some of Kenny Chesney’s songs.  I’ve been pretty open thus far when asked about my favorite from “Welcome To The Fishbowl” being “El Cerrito Place”.  This is a great song.  First of all, the chemistry between Kenny and Grace, just as in “You and Tequila”, is amazing.  Her voice is incredible and Kenny and Grace make a great duo.  Like all songs from “Welcome To The Fishbowl” this one has some deep story and meaning and will tell different stories to each of us.  Every fan listening can relate to this song in one way or another.  For me, there’s the relation of a search… a search for something more from that someone you can’t seem to reach; that someone you can only imagine as part of your life, but you know there’s that connection that will link your souls.

Until I met my wife I was constantly on that search.  I could see the person I would be with, but could never picture her face or the full future I would have with her.  I was looking and looking and sometimes felt I had been right there with that person, but never reached the point of reality.  No longer searching because I have found my baby!

The song’s chorus is a pleading repetition: I been lookin’ for you baby… Imagine the relationship in “Come Over” having dwindled even further into the distance, as though the narrator woke up months or years down the road to realize what he was missing — this song might be the result. In that way, the track perfectly bookends Welcome to the Fishbowl, and brings the album’s themes of holding on and letting go full circle. “There is a tortured soul in this song, trying to fill up a hole,” Kenny says. “I tell ya, this world can mess you up. And love, as great as it is, it can be hard on a person. The longing of this frustrated, angry, soul-searching emotion this person is feeling… I think it defines a lot of people. I have felt all that emotion, and I’ve lived the song for so long, and it has haunted me. I just love what it says, and I love the way Keith wrote it.”

I been hangin’ round this place, I been lookin’ through your space I been waitin’ for you, I’ve been waitin’ for you All the places that you go, all the people that you know I’ve been lookin’ for you, I’ve been lookin’ for you

And all these pretty people up on El Cerrito Place They all got somethin’ in their pockets, all got somethin’ on their face They roll down to La Brea where it meets the boulevard Singin’ hallelujah while they dance over the stars They all say they’re goin’ far

Me I’ve been lookin’ for you baby, I’ve been lookin’ for you baby I’ve been lookin’ for you baby, I’ve been lookin’ for you baby All night long, all night long, all night long

Somebody said they might have seen you where the ocean meets the land So I’ve been out here all night lookin’ for your footprints in the sand Did you hear the ocean singing, baby did you sing along while you danced out in the water to some ol’ forgotten song, Were you even here at all?

Me I’ve been lookin’ for you baby, I’ve been lookin’ for you baby I’ve been lookin’ for you baby, I’ve been lookin’ for you baby All night long, all night long, all night long

Somehow I wound up in the desert just after daylight Where the Joshua Trees grow that little place you always liked These pioneer town people ain’t got too much to say And if you ever were here baby they ain’t givin’ you away

Now it’s been two days I’m still lookin’ for you baby, I’ve been lookin’ for you baby I’ve been lookin’ for you baby, I’ve been lookin’ for you baby All night long, all night long, all night long

And all these pretty people up on El Cerrito Place They all got somethin’ in their pockets, all got somethin’ on their face

Somebody said they might have seen you where the ocean meets the land So I’ve been out here all night lookin’ for your footprints in the sand

Think I’ll go back to the city, back to El Cerrito Place That’s the last time I saw that pretty smile upon your face I’ve been lookin’ for you baby…
